Last week, we visited Rachael Laidler, owner and head cook at Fuel 4 You. Fuel 4 You is a restaurant that serves and delivers delicious, home-cooked meals at an affordable price. The meals come with a friendly smile and genuine love for the art of cooking while providing tantalizing healthy food for hungry customers in the Chatham area. The restaurant is located in the KBD Hall at 34 Byng Avenue in Chatham.
Rachael is an entrepreneur who started her small business by competing in Chatham-Kent Workforce Planning Board’s ‘Dining in the Den’ competition. She won second place and with that, some funds to help bring her dream alive. She currently rents out her kitchen in the KBD Hall but that does not stop her from creating an inviting atmosphere. There are plenty of tables for those who would like to dine in.
She offers an array of food from pub style fare to daily fresh keto meals for those who prefer low carb options. She prepares a daily fresh menu that always features something new whether it be mouth-watering shepherd’s pie, hearty lasagna or flavourful stir-fry. Daily fresh dinner items are ready by 3pm everyday.
Tuesday is Family Burger Night at Fuel 4 You. Families can order four homemade burgers with a large fry for $35. delivered to their door step. This is the only meal that is delivered without a delivery fee. Fry Bar Friday features fresh cut fries with an assortment of toppings such as taco meat, cheese, and gravy. Furthermore, Fuel 4 You also provides a lunchtime catering service for meetings.
She welcomes customers from all walks of life from seniors who do not cook to busy families on the go to single people who prefer home cooked meal options over fast food.
Fuel 4 You closes at 8pm, however, customers who work later have the option of picking up their orders after closing time. The staff at the KBD Club kindly distributes orders after Rachael has closed her kitchen for the night.
As a business owner, Rachael is also involved with her community. She is starting a collaboration with Create-Abilities CK to offer cooking classes and paint nights for individuals with disabilities and their family and friends.
We asked Rachael what she loves about her work. She enjoys the flexibility of working for herself and she especially loves it when a satisfied customer compliments a meal. She has always enjoyed entertaining and cooking for people and now she is doing it for a living.
Her greatest challenge is not owning the location. She has limited opportunities to decorate her space and if there is an event happening in the hall, she needs to work around it.
Finally, we asked Rachael what piece of advice she would give to anyone thinking of starting their own business.
Rachael advised, “Don’t let your fear hold you back.”
She explained that she was scared to quit her full time job and fully commit to her restaurant idea. Once she took the risk of diving completely into her new small business, everything fell into place.
We were curious as to what what dish Rachael would recommend and although, it is understandably hard to choose just one, she informed us that her most popular meals include the roasted herb and garlic chicken, lasagna and her home made burgers.
Fuel 4 You not only serves fresh, enticing home cooked meals but also actively gives back to the Chatham community.
